Home / Community Care

If you live in your own home, as you get older you might find that you need help with some parts of your life. This could be for general activities around the house, social activities, or with personal and health care. Sometimes family and friends are there to help you. If not or you need more or different types of help, there are a range of support programs to help. The government service My Aged Care has more on this.

Here we provide an overview of some of the key things you will need to consider.

The first step is to think about what services you might need.

What services do I need?

You can begin by asking yourself what you need help with. Ask yourself:

  • What might help me with my day to day life
  • What do I enjoy doing and what support do I need to continue
  • What support do I need to feel safe
  • Where and when do I want support
  • What support do I already have.

If you are self-managing your home care the Council on the Ageing (COTA) toolkit can help you to list and prioritise your needs and choose care services.
