Aged care services provide care to people in their last years, months, and days of life. Caring for older Australians at the end of life requires a workforce that is skilled and knowledgeable across all settings of care. With growing numbers of Australians expected to die while receiving aged care services, aged care staff need access to education and training.
The importance of developing the workforce is acknowledged in the strengthened aged care standards with specific reference to workforce planning and human resource management. Orientation, training and education will be essential to support the aged care workforce. Engagement and support from managers and leaders, and time specifically allocated to training, can improve participation and benefits associated with the learning activity. Many staff are also keen to share their knowledge with others and look forward to making use of this new knowledge at work.
This section provides access to online learning opportunities for aged care and primary care staff, information about formal qualifications, and details on what has been developed for aged care within the National Palliative Care Program. Managers and educators can also find out about palliAGED products that can be used to develop their workforce in the palliAGED products section.
