Listed here are some key journals and databases where you can find literature online about aged care. Wherever possible we have given preference to those that provide high quality information free online. We have indicated those where subscription may be required.
How can I access the information that is not free?
- Public libraries may be able to get items for you by inter-library loan
- University libraries often provide access to electronic resources for former students
- Membership of professional associations (e.g., Australian College of Nursing, Australian Nursing Federation) may confer access to certain publications
- Facilities may wish to subscribe to a journal title that is considered useful
- Individual articles can often be purchased online.

Covers social gerontology, residential, home and community care services, geriatric medicine, health services research and the biology of ageing.
The Director
A professional journal, specifically designed for Directors of Nursing in long term care. Papers address issues relative to the administration of the nursing department in a long term care facility. Issues include clinical research findings as well as management issues.
Geriatric Nursing
Aims to be an authoritative and comprehensive source for clinical information and management advice relating to the care of older adults.
International Journal of Older People Nursing
An online only (from 2012) publication providing an international forum for advancing knowledge to inform practice in gerontological nursing.
Journal of Gerontological Nursing
Deals with the practice and / or teaching of gerontological nursing.
Journal of Religion, Spirituality and Aging
An interdisciplinary, interfaith professional journal exploring spirituality, religion, and Ageing issues. It includes the practices, theories, and data on religion and spirituality, as well as ethical issues, grief, death, long-term care for the elderly, support systems for families, retirement and counselling.
Journal of the American Medical Directors Association
Covers topics such as geriatric medicine, dementia and cognitive impairment, rehabilitation, chronic comorbid conditions, the frail elder, medication management and prescribing issues, multi-resistant organisms and infectious diseases, falls prevention, assisted living risks and challenges.

Australian Institute of Health and Welfare
AIHW is a major national agency set up by the Australian Government to provide reliable, regular and relevant information and statistics on Australia's health and welfare. It contains a section on aged care.
Australian Policy Online: Aged Care
This site provides research and resources in the public interest and contains a large section of health related information.
CareSearch Review Collection
This collection provides an easy way to find reviews on topics relevant to palliative care.
Clinical Practice Guidelines Portal
The resource has been developed to help Australian clinicians and policy-makers access clinical practice guidelines via a single entry point.
Healthdirect
This Australian Government site (chiefly for patients) aims to provide a single entry point to reliable information from peak health organisations, government agencies and educational and research institutions.
Joanna Briggs Institute
The Institute provides reliable evidence which health professionals can use to inform their clinical decision making. It develops evidence in various formats for nursing, allied health and medical professionals. Some information is available free via a search on the JBI web site. Much of the content requires subscription.
National Library eResources
Australian residents can register online as a library user for a library card to enable access to licenced databases.
PubMed
The PubMed database contains more than 19 million citations for biomedical articles from Medline and life science journals. References include links to free full-text articles or to publisher web sites (where charges may apply to access the full text).
