Policy Directions

The Australian government's National Palliative Care Strategy 2018 confirms the policy directions of the original 2010 strategy with its focus on reducing palliative care-related hospitalisations for both economic and quality of life reasons. [1] It also aligns with the 67th World Health Assembly resolution 67.19 (158kb pdf) announced in 2014, calling on nations to strengthen palliative care as a component of comprehensive care throughout the life course. In forming the Australian national policy six guiding principles have been defined to guide efforts towards achieving seven goals.

Guiding principles:

  • Palliative care is person-centred care
  • Death is a part of life
  • Carers are valued and receive the care they need
  • Care is accessible
  • Everyone has a role to play in palliative care
  • Care is high quality and evidence-based.

Goals:

  • Understanding
  • Capability
  • Access and choice
  • Collaboration
  • Investment
  • Data and evidence
  • Accountability.
