The Australian government's National Palliative Care Strategy 2018 confirms the policy directions of the original 2010 strategy with its focus on reducing palliative care-related hospitalisations for both economic and quality of life reasons. [1] It also aligns with the 67th World Health Assembly resolution 67.19 (158kb pdf) announced in 2014, calling on nations to strengthen palliative care as a component of comprehensive care throughout the life course. In forming the Australian national policy six guiding principles have been defined to guide efforts towards achieving seven goals.
Guiding principles:
- Palliative care is person-centred care
- Death is a part of life
- Carers are valued and receive the care they need
- Care is accessible
- Everyone has a role to play in palliative care
- Care is high quality and evidence-based.
Goals:
- Understanding
- Capability
- Access and choice
- Collaboration
- Investment
- Data and evidence
- Accountability.
