Education Workforce

What we know

Education is a key part of initial training and preparation of the aged care workforce who will provide care for older Australians approaching the end of their life. Enrolled nurses and care workers provide most direct care to older people. They need skills, knowledge and support in feeling prepared and confident in caring for people who are approaching the end of their life.

What can I do?

Share opportunities to discuss care issues using the palliAGED Practice Tip Sheets and sign up for the palliAGED newsletter to hear about providing best practice palliative care.

Download the palliAGED apps for palliative care support on your phone. If you prefer to use a computer, you can view the content online through your web browser.

What can I learn?

The Palliative Care Bridge offers a number of videos and printed information covering the many aspects of illness, suffering, palliative care, caring for someone with a life-limiting illness, dying, loss, grief, and bereavement.

The Palliative Care Curriculum for Undergraduates (PCC4U) project has core online learning modules and case studies for undergraduate and recently graduated students.

If you are looking for training and education in palliative care visit the palliAGED Training and Education, CareSearch Health Practitioner Education and CareSearch Community Education sections.

What can my organisation do?

The Advance Project helps general practice nurses get involved with advance care planning and palliative care. Tell your staff about it.

In-house education on end of life care can be valuable for aged care staff. Use palliAGED Practice Tip Sheets and the ELDAC videos for careworkers in local training.

Tell staff about the Advance Project online training opportunities.

Experiential learning can be helpful. Program of Experience in the Palliative Approach (PEPA) offers supportive placements in palliative care.

Encourage staff to use the resources of The Palliative Care Curriculum for Undergraduates (PCC4U) project.
